Can anybody help decipher total amount of reads from SMART data for 2nd hand HDDs from Chia mining operation?

Hi All,

I can buy 2nd hand X18 Seagates at good price. They were run for 1.5yr 24/7 in Chia mining rig. They have 3 yrs of warranty left. Only 20tb of writes but I am trying to decipher reads as they potentially look astronomical.

Please look below and help me if you can. Would very high reads be a problem for you with those kind of HDDs? I plan to use them from 4k rips of my UHD disc collection media storage in my NAS.

Another problem I can see that the highest lifetime reading of temp was 64'C so that is 4C over the spec of Seagate...

Would you be interested in those kind of 2nd hand HDDs - 200e a pop for 18tb.

I am looking at SMART data from Exos X18 HDD using SeaTools and I am getting following readings:

Lifetime Writes From Host 38441230844 (decimal) or 0009FCBA5004 (HEX)
Lifetime Reads From Host 145527953020108 (decimal) or 874026439FCB (HEX)

HDD Sentinel software displays Writes as 19.97TB.

Would anybody know how to translate Reads it into TB / PB?

Thanks

The numbers count block reads/writes, and a block is 512 bytes. So, about 66PB read.

For spinning disks, the reads and writes aren't nearly as important as for an SSD. I have some 8TB HGST SAS drives that have similar numbers to what you posted, and they work great. If the drives pass SMART tests and badblocks, they are definitely fine.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I came to the same calculation, however it is not possible to achieve that number in 1.5yr as it would require ~1200mb/s read speed from HDD.

Somebody suggested that if the number is in bits rather than bytes then it would make more sense as it would bring it to 180mb/s and around 8PB.

However then the writes do not make sense...

200€ isn’t a good deal imho, when around 280€ new…

I just bought 5x4TB used SAS HDDs for my backup server for 40€… Agree that this was a good deal, but I wouldn’t pay more than 10€ per TB for HDDs with normal usage… max 5€ per TB for these ones…

Can you please link 280 for a new one?

Thanks. I think I will go with them. Only the warranty is questionable but I will enquire with the shop.

Actually I will probably go with 20TB versions of those Toshibas as they make more sense financially.

Check the power-on hours. Those drives could be as old as 4 years. My bet is that they were running for more than 550 days.

Hey,

I should have stated it that POH is confirmed to to be 1.5yr at 12k hours.

There is still a light chance I will get them as the seller also have a different batch, which has seen different use case. I am currently waiting for their SMART details.
